I also learned this song from David Morris of Ivydale, WV who learned it from his neighbor, Jenes Cottrell.
Jenes was a banjo maker and singer who lived on Deadfall Run in Clay County,WV. David speculates that Jenes may have learned this from a printed source. Wayne Erbsen has recorded and identified the author as M.G. Smith of the 2nd Regiment Texas Volunteers. That version found on Southern Soldier Boy (Native Ground #005) has some verses that are identical to those of this version, but Jenes's version has some additional verses.
